5 Good Smells
Scientists Discover Five Things That Smell Good To Nearly Everyone

The best and worst smells
According to the humans tested, what were the best smells? From the range of essential oils that were tested, these were the winners.
1. lime (fruit)
2. grapefruit (fruit)
3. bergamot (similar to an orange in scent)
4. orange (fruit)
5. peppermint
Here are the runners-up:
6. freesia (flower)
7. amyl acetate (a molecule that smells like apples and bananas)
8. cassia (similar to cinnamon)
9. mimosa (flowering tree)
10. fir (tree)
And the worst? The researchers say the smells consistently ranked the worst included "either carboxylic acids or amines [and] cyclohexanol." These would probably produce sharp, vinegary smells.
How to live longer
Healthful cooking. Organisms from yeast to rodents to humans all benefit from cutting calories. In less complex organisms, restricting calories can double or even triple lifespan. It's not yet clear just how much longer calorie restriction might help humans live, but those who practice the strict diet hope to survive past 100 years old
"The focus of my research is not really to extend lifespan to 120 or 130 years," says Fontana, research associate professor of medicine at Washington University and an investigator at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in Rome, Italy. "Right now, the average lifespan in Western countries is about 80, but there are too many people who are only healthy until about age 50. We want to use the discoveries about calorie restriction and other related genetic or pharmacological interventions to close that 30-year gap between lifespan and 'healthspan.'

O and the Jews
There's a new poll according to which 42 percent of American Jewish voters say they would vote to re-elect President Obama and 46 percent say they would consider voting for someone else. But I wonder how many of those among the 46 percent would consider voting for an actual Republican.
Nonetheless, the poll provides some evidence of intelligent life among my fellow American Jews. In 2008, according to exit polls, Obama carried the Jewish vote by a margin of 78-21.
Tea Parties – Better educated and photos from around the country
Of the Tea Party supporters who responded, 20 percent make more than $100,000, versus 14 percent for the general pool of people polled. Fourteen percent of Tea Party supporters have a post-graduate education, compared with 10 percent for the general public. Twenty-three percent of Tea Party supporters have a college degree, compared with 15 percent for the general public, according to the poll.

Tax Day Tea Party, Colorado Springs
Conservative Lesbian Cynthia Yockey sends this cellphone pic from the Bel Air, MD tea party. Great pic — I wonder what kind of cellphone this is?

READER MASON IBAS SENDS THIS PIC FROM TUCSON and writes: “What a well behaved bunch of people. Just lots of conversation about the issues of the day. I’m a sports photographer and thought I’d stop by and check the ‘racist mob,’ what a let down.”
UPDATE: Reader Mike McAlpine writes from Denver: “I thought you might like some photos from sunny Denver. We had a good turnout with thousands showing up in the middle of a work day. A great crowd with lots of Gadsden flags. I think the number of Gadsden flags means more and more people are identifying with the Tea Party.”
UK Air Traffic Before And After Icelandic Volcano Eruption
We used the "Plane Finder" iPhone app to pull screen shots of airplane traffic before and after the UK became a no-fly zone. The results were unastonishingly devoid of air traffic.
Liberal Patti weights in on O’s bowing
![]()
Bill, you know I am usually one of your more liberal friends but I had to comment on the bowing issue. I remember reading about how our POWs took extreme beatings during both the Vietnam War and WWII when Japanese held them for refusing to bow. ![]()
I also remember that we are the only nation at the Olympics who do not dip our flag to that of the host nation.
We need to remember where bowing came from, at least to my knowlege, you bowed showing submissivness. Look at my two dogs; one is alpha and other the submissive. The alpha is a kind and gentle alpha but I can guarantee you he does not put his front legs and the ground and stick his butt up in the air to ANYBODY!

Obama bowing to President of China
So even in the animal kingdom, bowing means recognizing a leader. That said, in a political situation it is absolutely imparative for our leader to show respect possibly to other leaders but NOT submissiveness.
Just my liberal two cents
Neil Armstrong and 26 NASA Legends Blast Obama's Space Plan
Obama's space plan is bad for the United States' future as a technological superpower. It's actually bad for the entire world. That's basically the summary of Neil Armstrong and 26 NASA legends' open letter to President Obama

Remember the young couple in New Orleans that were beaten for wearing a Palin button?
Allee Butsch suffered a broken leg from the beatdown outside to the SRLC dinner at Brennan’s Restaurant in New Orleans. She had her leg operated on over the weekend and it will take her months to recover. Her boyfriend Joe Brown suffered a broken nose, a broken jaw, and a concussion. They were attacked after leaving the Southern Republican Leadership Conference dinner at Brennan’s Restaurant.
Where Shakespeare wrote

Shakespeare may have written A Midsummer Night's Dream to celebrate the marriage of the Earl and Countess of Bedford, earlier owners of the manor. I like to think of him wandering into the future garden. . .
More on the volcano in Iceland (Paris will some how see a painting in the bottom photo.)
Chaos is reigning across Western Europe today, with hundreds of flights canceled due to volcanic ash sweeping across the continent.

It would fit with his overall “leveling” efforts. Very distrubing.

In a little-noticed remark at the close of the D.C. nuclear summit, Obama suggested the U.S. is somehow burdened by its military might
Iceland's volcanic ash halts flights across Europe
![]()
Civil aviation authorities say flights won't start departing or arriving in Britain until at least Friday morning because of a huge ash cloud spewed by an Icelandic volcano.
The National Air Traffic Service said Thursday that non-emergency flights won't be permitted in British airspace until at least 1 a.m. (0500 GMT) Friday.
A statement from the authority said the "cloud of volcanic ash is now spread across the U.K. and continuing to travel south."
