VS Naipaul has stirred up a hornets’ nest. The Nobel laureate said on Tuesday evening there is no female author whom he considers his equal, while speaking at the Royal Geographic Society. He was asked if he considered any woman writer his literary match and replied: “I don’t think so.” When pressed about Jane Austen, he added that he “couldn’t possibly share her sentimental ambitions, her sentimental sense of the world”.
The Guardian has the whole story.
