Clunker Math

Think of it this way:  A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800 gallons of gas a year.  A vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons a year.  So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.   They claim 700,000 vehicles so that's 224 million gallons saved per year.  That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.   5 million barrels is about 5 hours worth of US consumption.  More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about $350 million dollars So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350 million.
We spent $8.57 for every dollar we saved.

100 Years

Happy 100th Birthday To The Aircraft Carrier

It was only a few years after the Wright Brothers that inventors contemplated whether airplanes could be launched from a ship. Today, on the 100th anniversary, here's the story of the man who did it first.

House Repeals Obamacare 245-189

After a heated midterm election, the Republican-led House easily passed legislation to repeal the nation's sweeping health care law.

The vote was 245-189. There were four Democrats that voted for repeal.

Overturning the law was a major campaign plank for Republicans in the 2010 elections, and many of the House's nearly 100 new lawmakers promised to repeal the law that was pushed by President Obama and congressional Democrats.

Have gone by this island 4 times. Always wondered what it was. It is completely overgrown. It is actually a lovely setting.

An abandoned quarantine island, in plain sight of New York City

An abandoned quarantine island, in plain sight of New York CityA stone's throw away from Manhattan, Bronx, and LaGuardia Airport sits North Brother Island, an one-time quarantine facility that housed infectious individuals like "Typhoid" Mary Mallon. The island has since been exiled from the surrounding metropolis and left to nature.

Despite being in the East River (and basically next door to Rikers Island), North Brother Island has been uninhabited since the Sixties; it's presently used as a bird sanctuary by the New York City Parks Department. The island's buildings have been left to rot for almost 50 years. Kingston Lounge has a detailed history and many photos of this abandoned facility:

An abandoned quarantine island, in plain sight of New York City

Situated in the Hell Gate, a particularly treacherous stretch of the East River, North Brother was home to the quarantine hospital that housed Typhoid Mary, was the final destination of the General Slocum during its tragic final voyage, and was the site of an experimental drug treatment program which failed due to corruption. Riverside Hospital, the name of the facility on the island throughout its various incarnations, treated everything from smallpox and leprosy to venereal disease and heroin addiction; after the Second World War, it housed soldiers who were studying under the GI bill. The entirety of the island has been abandoned since 1963; over a dozen buildings remain, in various states of disrepair.

Keeping their word and from those who should know.

SCIENTISTS: Climate change study had 'significant errors'...

A climate change study that projected a 2.4 degree Celsius increase in temperature and massive worldwide food shortages in the next decade was seriously flawed, scientists said Wednesday.

The study was posted on the website of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was written about by numerous international news agencies, including AFP.

But AAAS later retracted the study as experts cited numerous errors in its approach.

"A reporter with The Guardian alerted us yesterday to concerns about the news release submitted by Hoffman & Hoffman public relations," said AAAS spokeswoman Ginger Pinholster in an email to AFP.

"We immediately contacted a climate change expert, who confirmed that the information raised many questions in his mind, too. We swiftly removed the news release from our Web site and contacted the submitting organization."

Scientist Osvaldo Canziani, who was part of the 2007 Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, was listed as the scientific advisor to the report.

Wow! He promised he would make it public. I am really surprised by this.
