Nostalgia, Geezers And "Distilling Culture" ...From Paris

Faith Popcorn, fabulous futurist, describes baby boomers in a way that only a baby boomer could understand.  We like nostalgia.  We find "comfort in familiar pursuits."  We "distill culture" and "blend it with deep consumer insight."

Why else would we pay a lot of money to pack venues featuring grey haired geezers perform their hit "Takin' It To The Streets?"  (Special Note to the Doobie Brothers from Paris:  Although parting your long grey hair down the middle, and wearing Grandpa Walton baggy jeans was NEVER a good look,  I love you just the same)

As the world becomes more unstable, we seek tranquility; we seek the comfort of our familiar past.

Ps If you are asking yourself who the Doobie Brothers are or who Grandpa Walton was, you are not a baby boomer.

Obama Vacation House Goes Up For Sale -

Blue Heron Farm, which has served as the Obama family vacation home on Martha’s Vineyard, has just been put on the market with a price tag of $23.7 million.

Because President Barack Obama and family have rented the compound for one week for the past three years, bringing with them staffers and Secret Service, many call it the “Summer White House.”

Obama ignored costs? Hard to believe.

Quote of the day

Ivar Giaever, a Nobel prize winner, who just resigned from the American Physical Society because of its religious belief in global warming

“The claim (how can you measure the average temperature of the whole earth for a whole year?) is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this ‘warming’ period.”

Who created these huge, mysterious wheel patterns in the Mideast thousands of years ago?

Called geoglyphs, these strange circular patterns etched into the rocky sands from Saudi Arabia to Syria have no known meaning or origin. Though archaeologists say they likely date back over 2,000 years, there are no records of who made them, nor why they would make such elaborate patterns that can only be appreciated from the air.

First photo of $1.5 million Ferrari Enzo crashing into the ocean

Earlier today, Jalopnik was the first to bring you photos of the custom Ferrari Enzo that went swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. Now we've got a first photo of the rare supercar sliding into the water.

The Enzo pictured is a highly modified version of the Ferrari supercar designed to look and perform like the track-only FXX. Worth an estimated $1.5 million (dry), the car's owner — self-proclaimed bad-boy exotic dealership owner Zahir Rana — was driving it in the Targa Newfoundland alongside other exotics when he went off course

The driver and co-driver are in good shape physically and the car is reportedly in decent condition. Emotionally, this photo suggest Rana is a little bummed.

White House Initially Denied Republican's Request to Attend Medal of Honor Event

The White House initially denied a request by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) to attend a Medal of Honor ceremony for a fellow Marine Corps and Afghanistan war veteran, a congressional source said.

Hunter first learned last week about plans for President Obama to award former Marine Cpl. Dakota Meyer the Medal of Honor during a Thursday ceremony at the White House. Hunter formally requested to attend the ceremony earlier this week, but the White House said no, the congressional source said.

Medal of Honor Recipient Dakota Meyer

Medal of Honor Winner is Reluctant Hero

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer consented to press interviews so people would know the story of the teammates who didn't survive the ambush in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

The men Meyer wants the world to remember are Lt. Michael Johnson, Staff Sgt. Aaron Kenefick, Gunnery Sgt Edwin Johnson and Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class James Layton.

At his request, they will be memorialized at hometown ceremonies while he is awarded the nation's highest honor for bravery during a White House ceremony Thursday with President Obama..

"Those guys gave their lives so you have to remind (the public) everyday. You know, that's the least you can do,” said Meyer, who killed eight Taliban fighters, some at close range.

But Meyer, who spoke with reporters recently at his grandfather Dwight Meyer's farm, does not particularly care for the limelight, Lt.. Col. Chris Hughes, who coordinated media requests, warned all of the reporters coming and going from the interviews.

"If you ask a stupid question, Dakota will let you know," Hughes said. He also told Fox News that Meyer does not like revisiting that ambush that earned him the medal.

"If you just jump right in, you're going to get a push back," Hughes said.

General accused WH of pressuring him to change testimony for Democratic donor

Whoa.

The four-star Air Force general who oversees U.S. Space Command walked into a highly secured room on Capitol Hill a week ago to give a classified briefing to lawmakers and staff, and dropped a surprise. Pressed by members, Gen. William Shelton said the White House tried to pressure him to change his testimony to make it more favorable to a company tied to a large Democratic donor.

The episode—confirmed in interviews with administration officials and the chairman of a congressional oversight committee—is the latest in a string of incidents that have given Republicans sudden fodder for questions about whether the Obama administration is politically interfering in routine government matters that affect donors or fundraisers. Already, the FBI and a House committee are investigating a federal loan guarantee to a now failed solar firm called Solyndra that is tied to a large Obama fundraiser.

'Mohammed was a cult leader': FBI teaches agents that 'mainstream’ Muslims are violent and radical

The FBI is teaching its counterterrorism agents that 'mainstream' Muslims are likely to be terrorist sympathisers and that the more devout a Muslim the more likely they are to be violent.

According to documents leaked by an FBI whistleblower, agents have also been instructed that the Islamic practice of giving charity is a 'funding mechanism for combat' and that the Prophet Mohammed was a 'cult leader'.

The programme even featured a graph showing a sliding scale of Koran-inspired violence.

Leaked material: The graph included in the training manual shows that the more devout a Muslim, the more likely they are to be violent

Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist Resigns Over Global Warming

Dr. Ivar Giaever, a former professor with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the 1973 winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, abruptly announced his resignation Tuesday, Sept. 13, from the premier physics society in disgust over its officially stated policy that "global warming is occurring."
The official position of the American Physical Society (APS) supports the theory that man's actions have inexorably led to the warming of the planet, through increased emissions of carbon dioxide.
Giaever does not agree -- and put it bluntly and succinctly in the subject line of his email, reprinted at Climate Depot, a website devoted to debunking the theory of man-made climate change.
"I resign from APS," Giaever wrote.
Giaever was cooled to the statement on warming theory by a line claiming that "the evidence is inconvertible."
"In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible?" he wrote in an email to Kate Kirby, executive officer of the physics society.
"The claim … is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this 'warming' period," his email message said.

The economic policy the “federal family” should adopt can be expressed in five one-syllable words: Get. Out. Of. The. Way.

Solyndra Watch

The Treasury Department's inspector general has opened a new front in the investigation of the government loan to Solyndra, the now bankrupt company that had been touted as a model of President Obama's ambitious green energy program, ABC News and the Center for Public Integrity/iWatch News have learned.

The new probe involves the $535 million loan, arranged by the Energy Department, but actually processed by the Federal Financing Bank, a government lending institution that falls under Treasury's control. Already, the FBI and the Energy Department's inspector general have executed search warrants at Solyndra's headquarters and questioned company executives.

The Washington Post reported yesterday that the loan to Solyndra was fast tracked by the WH and Dept. of Energy so V.P. Joe Biden could get a photo-op staged at Solyndra's plant in California. The photo-op cost the American taxpayer $535 million.

Insulin nasal spray improves cognitive function in Alzheimer's patients

Insulin, delivered in a nasal spray, seems to improve cognitive function in Alzheimer's patients, according to research appearing in the Journal of Neurology. Nasal delivery is appropriate because the drug reaches the brain and central nervous system faster. But what is it about insulin, normally associated with diabetics, that helps memory? The researchers say insulin plays a role in the central nervous system and those who suffer from Alzheimer's experience a loss of insulin levels and activity.

In the study, Suzanne Craft of the University of Washington treated 104 patients with mild cognitive decline or mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Treatments were given through a nasal drug delivery device made by Kurve Technology of Bothell, WA. Four months later, the group that received the moderate insulin dose showed improvements in delayed story recall compared with the placebo group.
