No More Ruffled Shirts ...From Paris

Teased hair and high waisted prom dresses, bad bangs, cat eye glasses, one sandal on, one sandal off.  This fantastic family portrait reminds me of the spring of 1975.  As I recall, I was invited to a  prom; a simple note, passed to me in a crowded noisy high school hallway.  I wore a hideous pale blue high waisted dress with ivory lace trim.  He wore a pale blue tuxedo with a ruffle shirt.  He pinned a ghastly corsage on my shoulder and  I may have pinned a smaller version of the same on him.

Times have changed.  These days, asking your girl to the prom takes years of preparation and skillful planning.

"In some ways, say high schoolers, the new trend in asking can be chalked up to pure bragging rights. Everybody wants to be the best, says Zack Sierputowski, 17, a senior at Greenville Tech Charter High. Sierputowski went the writing-on-his-girlfriend's-car route his junior year, so he knew it had to be better his senior year. On a random Wednesday a couple of weeks ago, Sierputowski put his plan into action. Early in the morning he set up six signs along girlfriend Erika Houmann's route to school. They read, "Erika … Leigh … Will You … Be My … Prom Queen? … Love, Zack."

Afghani version of the 'welcome wagon'

U.S. officials are trying to determine whether an Afghan man who crashed a stolen pickup truck near a runway here was trying to attack Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

In a highly unusual breach of security, the Afghan man, apparently a contractor employed at the British-run Camp Bastion base in Helmand province, crashed the truck into a ditch and emerged on fire near the base's runway around the time that Mr. Panetta's C-17 aircraft was landing.

'American Idol' contestant has five active arrest warrants

The “American Idol” contestant expected to be booted from the show tonight is the subject of five outstanding arrest warrants in New Jersey, The Smoking Gun has learned.

Jermaine Jones, 25, is wanted in three separate counties for failing to appear in court on a variety of criminal charges dating back to 2006, according to court records. His two most recent arrests came last year in Camden County, where he works as a vocal instructor.

The oldest warrant stems from a 2006 narcotics bust in Salem County. Jones’s next collar came in 2008 in Woodbury, where he was cited on an open container charge. In 2009 he was nabbed for providing cops with a false name in Winslow Township.

Jones's first arrest in 2011 came in March, when he provided a cop with the false name "Joel Jones" to "avoid being apprehended on outstanding warrants for his arrest," according to a criminal complaint. He was nabbed in late-November for again giving false information to a police officer.
